David only recently began training with me having seen my ad on Facebook. A keen runner and a knowledgeable fan of the sweet science(as well as being a fan of another sport close to my heart, cricket), in just six weeks Davids progress has really impressed me, he has gone from being a virtual beginner to looking self assured on the pads and developing a nasty left hook in the process, he has picked up everything I have thrown at him very quickly. I am actually pretty excited to see how good he can become. Read on to listen to his views on boxing, life and who he’d most like to punch in the face….
Name
David
What is your job?
New Business Manager
How long have you been boxing?
6 weeks
What got you interested in Boxing?
I’ve been a fan since I was a kid. My Dad was an Ali fan so he first introduced me to boxing. We used to watch the big fights on ITV together back in the day.
What do you like most about boxing training?
Everything! Probably learning to throw the different punches properly. Plus the subtle intricacies in feinting, footwork etc that you wouldn’t see unless you box yourself.
Do you have any hobbies outside of boxing?
Travelling has always been a passion of mine.
Do you follow any other sports?
Football & cricket.
Is there a particular sportsman you admire?
These days I’d say Mo Farah. I’ve seen a few documentaries about his training regime and what he puts himself through. Being a keen runner myself he is truly incredible!
Which boxers do you enjoy watching and who is or was your favourite boxer?
I enjoy watching Lomachenko, GGG, Terrence Crawford & Mikey Garcia these days. My favourite ever fighter was Prince Naseem. Loved him! What a talent.
If you were to ever compete in the ring, what would be your boxing nickname and your ring walk song?
I always likes James Toney’s ‘Lights Out’ so maybe I’d steal that. Ring song – ‘run this town’ by Kanye West. Spell out my intentions early doors!
What is your prediction for the Anthony Joshua v Joseph Parker fight in March?
AJ stoppage mid rounds. I don’t rate Parker. I think he’s selling his belt. I like his nutty promotor though, David Higgins. Blokes a loon!
You’re Floyd Mayweather Jnr and you’ve just beaten Conor McGregor and made $100 million. What is the first thing you spend your money on?
An outrageously luxurious holiday for my family & friends.
Who would you most like to punch in the face?
Probably a fair few! But if it’s just one I’ll go for Adrien Broner. He’s everything that’s wrong with modern sportsmen.
How do you motivate yourself to keep training?
The benefits I feel from training. I like being fit and keeping in shape. It’s a part of my lifestyle I really enjoy.
How has the training made a difference to your life?
I’ve always loved boxing. The training has now given me a great understanding of the sport. It’s also given me confidence. It’s nice to know you can handle yourself if it’s ever needed.
What would you say to someone who wants to take that next step to begin training but just needs that extra motivation to get started?
Get involved. Make yourself go and you won’t regret it. I did a free session with Fayz after seeing an advert on facebook and I have gone every week since. I’ve improved massively since going. I’m 38 and I’ve just started boxing so it’s never too late.
Who or what inspires you?
These days my kids, I have a 7 year old daughter and a 4 year old son. They think I’m superman so I have to live up to it as best I can!
If you could go back in time to when you was a child, what advice would you give yourself?
To enjoy everything as time goes so quickly. If you have a passion then pursue it. Don’t put anything off until tomorrow.
Do you have any words of wisdom you live your life by?
To try and be a good human!
