Manny Pacquiao: Adrien Broner Fight is Next, January 12 or 19

The news coming out today is that it is going to be Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner in January of 2019. To some of us, it is still perplexing how Adrien Broner manages to stay relevant and bag these big money fights, for others they will be more than happy to see Broner face a potential loss against an all time great, even if Manny is at the end of his career.
Amir Khan certainly won’t be happy at hearing the news, Khan has been angling for a fight with either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jnr for years yet both seem to be constantly overlooking the Bolton fighter. For Khan I think it is a case of constantly crying for those fights that it gets to the point of becoming so annoying that they don’t want to fight him because they’ve had enough – the same way Khan is avoiding Brook because he is fed up of Brook constantly calling him out. I understand Khan is chasing the money, but if he just gets on with business and fights well, the big fights and big names will come, which will bring him the money. With this news Khan may have no other choice than to fight his long time nemesis and we may finally get to see Amir Khan vs Kell Brook.

For Broner, you can’t help but feel he is being looked at as one of those fighters who are good, just not good enough to beat the better fighters. I wouldn’t call him a B level fighter just yet, but losses against Maidana, Porter and Mikey Garcia show he is just a level below the best. At 29yrs old though, Broner should really be at his best but it seems his best days were more than 5yrs ago, with questionable training habits and questionable antics outside of the ring, will Broner ever re-focus enough to claim another world title?

The announcement also pours water on the rumours of a rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jnr for December of this year. There is still the possibility of that fight happening in 2019 though, Floyd though will of course be wanting that fight with UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov, mostly because it will be a boxing fight and very easy money for him. Either way, a fight between two active fighters, Pacquiao and Broner is much better for the sport of boxing than one involving Floyd Mayweather Jnr who just doesn’t seem to want to stay out of the limelight in one way or another. It’s not a bad match up, although I do favour Pacquiao to win this fight, both Broner and Pacquiao have seen better days and over their last 10 fights have been a little up and down. I expect Pacquiao to be too much to handle for Broner and to get outworked, but Broner will have his moments.

From Boxingscene.com

According to eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao, he’s going to return on a date in January – and his next opponent will be four division world champion Adrien Broner.

The 39-year-old Filipino boxing icon said the fight with Broner could be held either on Jan. 12 or 19, likely in Las Vegas.

According to Spin.ph, Pacquiao made the announcement on Wednesday night when he was introduced as the latest ambassador of International Sports Promotion Society at Makati Shangrila Hotel.

“Broner, Adrien Broner,” said Pacquiao when asked by Spin on who he’s going to fight next. “I think either January 12 or 19.”

As BoxingScene.com first reported a few days ago, Pacquiao signed on with powerful adviser Al Haymon – with the idea of eventually staging a rematch with Floyd Mayweather in 2019. Haymon works with Mayweather, Broner and most of the top welterweights in the sport – including world champions Errol Spence, Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter.

There has been heavy speculation overseas that Pacquiao would first face Broner and then move on to a second fight Mayweather, who decisioned the Filipino star in their first meeting in May of 2015 – in a fight that broke all financial records and generated well over half a billion dollars in revenue.

Pacquiao was in action back in July, in Malaysia, when he beat down and knocked out Lucas Matthysse to capture the WBA “regular” welterweight title. It was Pacquiao’s first stoppage win since November of 2009, when he put away Miguel Cotto inside the distance.

Broner was in action earlier this year, when he fought to a close twelve round draw with former champion Jessie Vargas. Pacquiao dominated Vargas for the WBO world title back in the fall of 2016. He then lost that title to Jeff Horn in a controversial upset in July of 2017.
