Coach Billy Briscoe joined me yet again to discuss the life and times of his mentor, Coach Wesley Mouzon.
It’s always great to speak to Coach Billy and once again he was fascinating to listen to. In this episode Coach Billy discusses Wesley Mouzon, going into detail about the fighting style of Mouzon and how he would later teach his fighters as he developed into one of the finest coaches in the sport of Boxing.
Wesley Mouzon was a Lightweight Boxer who fought in the 1940’s. Despite being a teenager he drew with the best lightweight of the decade, Ike Williams and beat another of the best in Bob Montgomery. Unfortunately it was in the rematch with Montgomery that Mouzon was forced to retire at just 19, suffering an eye injury. Mouzon turned to Boxing from the corner, becoming a coach and the highlight of his career as trainer was working with eventual Hall of Fame Boxer Dwight Muhammad Qawi.
Qawi started boxing in his 20’s, had no amateur career yet with Mouzons help he was able to become World Champion at both Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight, let’s not forget that Dwight Qawi was at most 5’7 in a division where almost everyone is over 6ft.
Included in the interview are more old school gems from Coach Billy Briscoe on training and tricks of the old school trade, providing us with just a snippet of the immense knowledge that was imparted to him by Wesley Mouzon.
