Thomas Hearns is one of the greatest ‘boxers’ in history. Hailing from the famous Kronk Gym under one of the best boxing trainers of all time Emanuel Steward, Hearns was unbeatable in the ring, and his opponents could hardly outbox him. Even when he lost a fight, Hearns was the superior boxer, and his adversary had to push hard and force a war to win against the Hitman.
Hearns was known for his cobra-like jab, his dynamite right hand, and his dangerous left hook to the body. At 6’2, lean, and with long arms, he was the perfect welterweight, and he could knock his opponents out with either hand behind one of the best jabs the boxing world has ever seen.
In this video, we can see an essential strategy that fighters can use to time their opponents’ jab. Hearns’ opponent in this video was predictable with his jab, as he did not vary his jab or change its speed, nor did he employ different jabs like a screw jab or up jab.
Hearns took advantage of this by getting accustomed to the speed and rhythm of his opponent’s jab and then looking for opportunities to counter. When his opponent was slow in bringing his jab back, Hearns followed the jab back and punched inside the ‘V’. He could then jab behind it and also start landing his right hand behind the opponent’s jab, ultimately ending the fight. Watch the video to see how Hearns executed this strategy perfectly.
If you’re a boxer, remember that being predictable with your tempo and punches will allow your opponent to quickly figure you out and plan your downfall. So, vary your jabs and change their speed to keep your opponent on their toes.
